What have you been up to since our last conversation?

The biggest news with the PlateSpin product line since our last conversation has been the major releases of PlateSpin Migrate 9.0, PlateSpin Protect 10.0 and PlateSpin Forge 3.0 – All part of Novell’s WorkloadIQ strategy.

New to PlateSpin Migrate, Linux Live Transfer allows our users to further reduce the downtime and risk associated with migrating business critical Linux workloads. Additionally, as organizations move more critical server workloads into a virtual infrastructure, version 9 also added support for the migration of Windows Clusters between physical and virtual infrastructures.

With PlateSpin Protect 10 we now allow customers to leverage existing virtual infrastructure to create one disaster recovery plan for all server workloads, whether physical or virtual, running both Windows and now Linux as well. We redesigned the user interface to allow for management, and a new level of visibility into the recovery process with built in reporting and alerting to facilitate compliance reporting and enhanced lights out management.

PlateSpin Forge 3.0 upgrades allow the product to now protect a wider array of workloads by offering flexible consolidated disaster recovery for all x86 physical and virtual workloads running Windows and Linux. Additional new features include upgraded hardware with increased memory and storage capacity for improved performance, new smart replication technology, Forge API and Windows cluster protection for business critical workloads.

These products add to our growing list of solutions designed to help our customers address the challenges in the emerging market of intelligent workload management.

Novell has been tackling the process of simplifying cross platform management since the 90’s with ManageWise. How has this process changed?

In many of the conversations I have with our customers and partners, an interesting theme that’s emerging is how cyclical the software industry has become. While the issues today are similar, the approach has evolved and modernized. Customers are now looking for solutions that not only manage across platforms, but across computing environments – physical, virtual and cloud. There is a new market emerging called Intelligent Workload Management.

As you’ve pointed out one area where we at Novell has been very much ahead of our time was our belief in cross platform management.

The commoditization of the x86 server market and the growth of virtualization technology as a strategic platform in the datacenter has added to the hodgepodge of technology and management silos in the modern datacenter. At Novell we believe that this trend will continue and the only way to stay ahead of the curve is to adopt a workload based management infrastructure, to be able to effectively manage across all your platforms whether the workloads reside on physical servers, virtual machines, and run Windows or Linux operating systems.

What are some of the largest challenges in managing a heterogeneous environment? How can those be addressed?

The core problem with a heterogeneous environment is the different silos of tools and skills that are required to manage each platform. Virtualization, as an example, has been an important new technology for customers to be able to reduce capital and operational costs in the datacenter, however the tools used to manage this new platform have been purpose built for virtualization only. It’s interesting to see many enterprises now defining virtualization specialists within their IT groups. It could be argued that the emergence of this new management silo has created as many problems as the technology itself had initially solved.

As a result, the ability to intelligently manage workloads across multiple platforms with one unified framework is fast becoming the holy grail of the datacenter.

The PlateSpin solutions help solve some of those core management issues, providing one solution for disaster recovery for physical and virtual servers running either Windows or Linux with PlateSpin Protect and PlateSpin Forge, and the ability to intelligently move live workloads anywhere to anywhere, with PlateSpin Migrate. This is a key part of our unique approach to the intelligent workload management market. We call it WorkloadIQ.

What is meant by the concept of “intelligent” workloads?

As the new basis of enterprise computing, workloads must be able to move between physical, virtual and cloud computing environments, depending on where capacity is available at the right price and with the right security and qualities of service.

This web app is currently supported on iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices. It’s written in HTML5 and is not specific to a device.

Get the VMware KB mobile app now

VMware KB app gives you the ability to:

Search the Knowledgebase

Read the Support Insider blog for important updates

Catch our twitter feed from @vmwarekb (great for its real-time stream of new published KB content)

Watch VMware KBTV (how-to videos)

You wouldn’t know it by looking at it, but the App is actually not a native app, but rather, implemented in HTML 5 (As BlackBerry moves to support this technology on future devices, we look forward to testing compatibility). This makes it easier to maintain and available to more up and coming platforms. That’s also why you don’t install the iPhone version from the iTunes store; you merely open a URL in your browser, and then install it to your Home screen.
