Virtuon Takes to the Clouds with Virtual Desktops

Submitted by on July 15, 2010 – 9:57 amNo Comment

VirtuonSCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Virtuon announced today it has unveiled a Virtual Desktop service based on cloud computing and virtualization technology. The desktops are accessible from any web browser and deliver full functionality of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Starting at $39.95 per month, the desktops are offered through a subscription service and are available with Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Users of the Virtual Desktops can install any number of applications and configure desktop personal preferences. As a “follow-me” application environment, users access the desktop from any device with internet access such as an Apple iPad, thin client, or traditional desktop to find the applications and personal settings just as they left them previously.

“Virtual Desktops are the next transition step to the flexibility, simplicity, and scale of cloud computing,” said Forrest Blair, CEO of Virtuon. “This exciting innovation also brings significant benefits to Systems Administrators charged with managing desktops. Operating System upgrades are simplified, expenses are reduced, and reliability is enhanced.”

The new service also opens the door for application developers to effortlessly extend their offerings to the cloud. “Previously, companies had to launch a Software-as-a-service development project to get their product hosted in the public cloud,” said Blair. “With Virtuon’s Virtual Desktop platform, all they need to do is install their application on Virtual Desktops and set up a subscription for their users.”

As part of the service, Virtuon offers several desktop options for processor speed, memory, and hard disk space. An optional Data Engine package is geared for users who need heavy number crunching and data processing. Virtuon has built its service on VMware, a leading virtualization platform and the offering comes from work at Virtuon’s cloud computing and virtualization center located at Scottsdale’s SkySong innovation complex. The company is offering free trials of the new service at their website www.virtuon-inc.com or by calling the company toll-free at 877-298-2083.
