Step by step – configuring networking under ESX Server 3.x

Submitted by Jitendra Kumar on February 7, 2010 – 6:48 pmNo Comment

5. Give the label to port group you are adding to networking in ESX server. You can also assign VLAN network ID here. Click next.

6. Click Finish to add a new virtual switch and new port group.

You can see in the above screen shots that there is no Physical NIC attached to this newly created virtual switch. One physical switch can be attached to more than one virtual switch however vice versa is possible that means you can attach more than one physical network interface cards to single virtual switch. The virtual switch which doesn’t have any physical nic attached is called internal only switch and virtual machines connected to this switch can’t communicate with outside world.

Adding port group to existing virtual switch

Method I

Process is same as explained under “adding new virtual switch and port group” in the beginning of the page except at step 4 you will need to select “Use vSwitch” instead of selecting “create a virtual switch”.

Method II

1. Login to ESX server using VI (Virtual Infrastructure) client and click on networking.

2. Click on properties of virtual switch.

3. Click on add.
